artist’s statement
I studied art in
college but never really found my niche until I discovered
polymer clay, a medium ideally suited to folk art. My work reflects
regional influences from all the areas where I've lived--Midwest,
Southwest, and Southern Appalachia. At first, I made home-decorating items; later I branched out into bead- and
jewelry-making. As I experimented with creating surface textures and
patterns, I discovered polymer clay's potential as a medium for two-dimensional painting. This is now my favorite creative outlet--one I
enjoy sharing with other painters and clay artists.

A customer at an outdoor arts and crafts show once commented that my jewelry showed a “playful spirit.” I’m proud of the lively, whimsical side of my work, so I chose the name to remind me to keep taking chances and having fun! (Besides, my dog Dewey looks so good in the elf hat.)
